Cohort 1 - 67 Students - (began study in 1998)
Cohort 2 - 56 Students - (began study in 2001)

Sixty-seven preschool students, between the ages of 2-6, whose primary diagnosis for services was autism spectrum disorder, began participating in this study in the fall of 1998. These 67 students in cohort #1 represented approximately 10% of all the children ages 2-6 in Oregon whose primary diagnosis for services was autism . The majority of the students in the first cohort were 3 and 4 years of age at the beginning of the study.

In the fall of 2001, 56 additional students between 2-4 years old were added to the study. This new cohort of students represented approximately 16% of all the 2-4 year olds in Oregon whose primary diagnosis for services was autism.

Baseline Demographics of Participants
The subjects were located in eight geographic areas of the state in approximate proportion to the population. All eight Oregon Regional Services, Special Education Programs were invited to nominate students for the study. Region I located in the far eastern portion of the state, nominated no students in 1998 but did include 4 students in 2001. This area is located in the least populated section of Oregon. Age group baseline scores for the study population, matched the children from the national standardization data from the primary monitoring instrument used in this study, the ASIEP-2 (Arick, et., al, 1996), within one-standard deviation of the population mean.

This table shows the demographic information for each student in the study. The information is broken down between cohort #1 and #2. Cohort #1 began the study in 1998 and Cohort #2 began the study in 2001. It also shows initial ASIEP-2 mean percentiles and other mean scores for all students from their first assessments.
